The bathroom is no longer a purely functional room: we want to feel good in it. Open showers, natural materials and handmade tiles are reshaping the room, provided the waterproofing is done with care.

The walk-in shower

Level with the floor, with no visible shower tray, it makes the room look larger and is easier to access, an advantage for living in your home for many years. It requires a well-executed slope towards the drain and careful waterproofing beneath the tiles. In an older house, the depth available beneath the floor determines the solution: floor drain, linear drain or ultra-slim shower tray.

Countertop basins and wall-hung units

Basins set on a wood, stone or polished concrete worktop create a more decorative feel. Wall-hung units free up the floor and make cleaning easier. Plan for closed storage, because a simple bathroom is a tidy bathroom.

Zellige and tiles with character

Zellige, a handmade glazed tile with irregular shades, gives depth to a shower wall. Terrazzo and encaustic cement tiles are making a comeback on floors. To keep a balance, pair one expressive material with calmer surfaces.

Taps and lighting

Matt black, brushed brass and stainless steel remain very popular. For lighting, combine general lighting, focused lighting at the mirror and, why not, soft lighting for the evening. Light fittings must be suitable for wet areas.

The technical points not to overlook

A bathroom is rarely redone: we advise you on the layout as much as on the materials, so that it stays beautiful and healthy for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have a walk-in shower upstairs?
Often yes, depending on the depth available beneath the floor and the route of the waste pipes. An ultra-slim shower tray is an alternative when it cannot be recessed.
Is zellige suitable for a shower?
Yes, with laying and grout suited to wet areas. Its irregularities are part of its charm.
Should you keep a bath?
It depends on your lifestyle and on resale: in a family home, keeping a bath in one of the bathrooms is often appreciated.
